Best Sustainability Websites 2010
CO2.Earth's predecessor, CO2Now.org, is one of more than 100 websites featured in the Spanish ebook, The Guide to the Best Websites on Sustainability 2010 (Guía de las mejores web en torno a la sostenibilidad 2010).
The author, Dr. Manuel Quirós Galdón notes his motivation for writing the book: 95% of people who use the internet read web pages from their own country and in their own language. The Guide to the Best Websites on Sustainability features websites in a number of languages (English and Spanish mostly) to promote sharing of sustainability information across languages, cultures and national boundaries.
The tabs below connect you to an ebook preview, purchase options and Michael McGee's interview with the author. A reprint of the CO2Now.org review is shown below with the author's permission.

Interview with Manuel Quirós Galdón
In 2010, Manuel Quirós Galdón responded to questions Michael McGee asked about his Guide to the Best Websites on Sustainability 2010.
McGee Why did you write a book about the best sustainability websites?
Quirós There are millions of sites and blogs on the internet. People who are interested in sustainability can easily get lost in the forest of options. By creating a guide that features some of the best sites, people can discover excellent information sources and people doing leading-edge work on sustainability. As well, it is for people who are sceptical of the need for sustainability work; it shows them that businesses, universities, think tanks and people around the world are serious and committed to the advancement of sustainability.
McGee What one or two characteristics are common to each selected website?
Quirós Each site is a jewel to be discovered. Some bring a philosophy of life. Some are outstanding sources of reliable information and resources. Others show us what climate leadership is, along with ground-breaking ways of engaging people on important local and global issues. All of them certainly show enthusiasm and give us hope for a better world that is greener, vibrant, just and of course, sustainable.
McGee How does the book fit with other sustainability projects you are working on?
Quirós I teach Environment and Sustainability at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid. At the start of a new course, the students often do not understand the term ‘sustainability’. Some do not see it as important. This reflects the general attitude of people in Spain today. This is worrisome because our students are the next generation and they should be leading us toward solutions. There is also the IPCC reports that tell us that Spain will be hit extra hard by climate changes and impacts. It will be hit hard because of its georgraphic location. These issues will be huge in this country. There are some tough times ahead. The Guide to Best Websites on Sustainability is helping students develop and prepare for the changes that are happening in Spain and around the world. It gives them access to some of the best sustainability resources and expertise from different parts of the world, even though most of the websites are in English, not just Spanish. This use of the online sustainability guide helps to make the university setting a center for driving new knowledge in sustainability issues.
McGee Would you like to say anything else about your book?
Quirós The book is a modest contribution to bring more order to the vast world of sustainability information on the internet. My aim is to assist as many people as possible around the world, and the internet is the ideal place. I am already working on a second volume because there are other sites that are making a unique contribution to sustainability.
Sustainability: The Journal of Record
CO2.Earth's predecessor, CO2Now.org, is featured in October 2010 edition of Sustainability: The Journal of Record. The feature is part of a review of sustainability websites in the article, The Sustainability Web.
Here is a featured excerpt from the article
"Under the theory that if more people see the numbers, they will recognize the urgency of the situation, the most up-to-date numbers dominate the home page."

.earth Founding Member
November 13, 2015
In July 2015, I was invited to set up one of the first .earth websites on the internet. As a result, I was permitted to set up not one but two .earth websites: CO2.earth and show.earth. The sites were launched November 13, 2015, as part of the .earth Registry's founding members program.
The CO2-data site I've been running since 2008, CO2Now.org, moved to CO2.Earth. The CO2 web widgets on the site moved to their own website at show.earth. Public registration started November 19, 2015.
Registration of a .earth domain is tied to this voluntary pledge:
"By registering a domain in the .earth TLD, Registrants voluntarily pledge to become ambassadors for Earth and do away with actions that harm Earth and its inhabitants."
~ .earth registration terms & conditions
As the creator of CO2.earth and show.earth, I enthusiastically take the .earth pledge. "Doing away with actions that harm Earth and its inhabitants" fits my purpose for operating these sites: to assist and support people worldwide in tracking and learning about planet harming trends like global warming. Doing this basic work, I believe, should help in building a movement bent on achieving stabilization at a global scale.
I look forward to seeing how far my projects get in the months and years ahead, and how new .earth initiatives pitch in to do away with actions that harm the earth, people and the wider community of life. It is certainly a privelege to be part of all this right at the start.

.earth Pledge
Here is a longer excerpt from the .Earth Registration Terms and Conditions:
"The .earth Top-Level Domain (TLD) is a new Internet extension developed for all Internet users. The .earth TLD is all about connecting and establishing cooperative relationships between individuals and organizations that wish to show their support for making Earth a better place. By registering a domain in the .earth TLD, Registrants voluntarily pledge to become ambassadors for Earth and do away with actions that harm Earth and its inhabitants. The Registry’s intent is to operate a TLD that can be used by individuals, organizations and businesses to create easily identifiable websites for sharing information, collaborating in local communities and forums, promoting goods and services and other innovative platforms for the betterment of Earth and society."
